Israel bars Dutch journalists

Two Dutch journalists who wanted to cover protests at the airport of Tel Aviv and in the West Bank town of Ramallah have been refused permission to fly to Israel.

Israeli security personnel at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport barred cameraman Bud Wichers and photographer Ettora Hesseling from boarding their flight. The two journalists were reportedly considered a security risk because of their involvement in the preparations for the international flotilla which was to have sailed from Greece to the Gaza Strip

Bud Wichers, who works for the ANP news agency, was initially to have sailed aboard the flotilla which wanted to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. The trip was cancelled because of a crisis of confidence between the journalists and the organisation. Radio Netherlands Worldwide correspondent Eric Beauchemin was one of the journalists who was to have sailed with the flotilla.

Only last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that foreign journalists would not be expelled for covering the protests.
