Internet thieves target private computers
Internet criminals are shifting their aim at private computers as they are usually poorly protected.24 June 2008
THE NETHERLANDS - More internet criminals are shifting their aim towards privately owned computers.
Govcert.nl, an organisation that helps the Dutch government and business community with computer problems says that until now it was mainly banks and other companies who were most affected by internet fraud and viruses.
But privately-owned computers are often poorly protected, which makes it easy for criminals to steal bank and credit card details without the knowledge of the computer owner. They might for example imitate a bank's website and then intercept customer login codes.
However, says Govcert.nl, a good firewall and virus scanner can prevent a great deal of such crime.
