THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch Bar Council is launching an independent inquiry into lawyers' fees this autumn.

Business people and the public complain that lawyers charge huge fees, often more than EUR 300 per hour. The inquiry is the first attempt by the lawyers' organisation to answer the criticism.

The level of fees has been a hot topic for some time. Research shows lawyers charge four to six times more than other providers of legal services.

It is hoped the inquiry will show whether tariffs are indeed too high.

However, if this is the case, it remains to be seen whether anything can be done to rectify the situation as lawyers are free to charge whatever they want.
