Increasing numbers of shootings and victims

The council of regional police force commanders says the Netherlands is facing an increasing number of shootings which are also claiming more lives.

Research by the RTL news channel shows that 36 people were killed in 166 incidents in the first six months of this year.

Most of the victims were killed in a shooting spree in a shopping mall in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn on 9 April.

The council has no explanation for the increase, but said that maybe it has become easier for criminals to buy guns because of the open borders between EU member states.
