Increase in monthly unemployment figures of 3,000 between November and January fall short of CBS Statistics Netherlands’ forecast.

THE NETHERLANDS –The increase in unemployment in January was less than expected, says CBS Statistics Netherlands.

Between November 2008 and January 2009, the jobless figure averaged at 304,000, just 3,000 more than in the previous three months. The increase falls short of CBS’ forecast of 10,000 more jobless people per month.

Based on seasonal effects, the organisation has predicted that unemployment will rise to 425,000 in 2009.

The statistics also show unemployment is increasing quickly in the transport and technical sectors. Young people with only lower or secondary school qualifications are being hit the hardest, while unemployment is increasing faster in the southern coastal province of Zeeland.
