THE HAGUE – The government has announced the budget for the coming year. The following are the most important points from the plans presented.
Value Added Tax rate will increase from 19 to 20 percent.
Unemployment premium paid by employees will decrease from 3.85 percent to 3.5 percent, and will be scrapped entirely in 2009.
Environmental tax on flight tickets: an extra EUR 11.25 will be charged for short flights, and EUR 45 for long flights (expected to yield EUR 350 million a year).
Welfare for those under 27 will be scrapped, study-work requirement will be introduced.
Beer will be more expensive (+ 2.7 cents per bottle), as will tobacco (+ 25 cents per pack)
First step in the introduction of free school books.
Introduction of community service internship.
EUR 2.5 million for emancipation of homosexuals and addressing violence.
Additional EUR 6 million for animal welfare.
The National Historical Museum will be established in Arnhem.
An additional EUR 20 million for promoting human rights worldwide.
The birth control pill, dental checks for 18-21-year-olds, and extra hours of maternity care will be included in the basic insurance package
