Dutch immigration authorities say a 60-year-old resident of Hong Kong whom they arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport last Tuesday was in the process of smuggling five Chinese people to Suriname.

The man allegedly provided the Chinese with forged passports. At passport control, officials spotted the photographs in the passports did not correspond to the faces of the passport-holders.

The group of five arrived at Schiphol on Tuesday from Tanzania and were waiting in the international transit lounge on the pretence they were bound for a flight to Hong Kong.

Detectives from a special border task unit were observing the suspects. They noticed the 60-year-old passed on new passports and air tickets to the five. When the immigration task team approached the group, it transpired they had a new destination – Suriname. T he task team - tipped off earlier this month about an unusual smuggling route for the Chinese - says it will continue with its investigation.
