Head of Labour party takes a tough stance on dual nationality and wants to lessen the influence immigrants’ country of origin have on them.

THE NETHERLANDS – The Labour party believes immigrants who apply for Dutch citizenship should give up their old nationality.

In an interview with De Volkskrant newspaper, Labour Party chair Lilliane Ploumen said while nationality has nothing to do with loyalty, she wants to lessen the influence on migrants of their former homelands.

An earlier report by the national statistics office CBS shows that a million people in the Netherlands have dual nationality.

Ploumen also said tolerance has been bad for integration and believes immigrants should make an unreserved choice for Dutch society.

The Labour party will no longer make the mistake of silencing criticism of people's cultures or religions because of not wanting to appear intolerant, she added.
