THE HAGUE – A group of about 200 illegal aliens are plaguing The Hague and environs with burglaries, robberies and assaults.

"This group really is a plague," Rob Panka wrote Tuesday in the Haaglanden police force's newspaper. He is corps coordinator for the Repeat Offenders Team.

The aliens refuse to disclose their identities, which means they cannot be deported. Their illegal status also disqualifies them from assistance programmes or placement in an institution for repeat offenders.

"Because of their criminal activities they are designated as undesirable aliens, making their stay in the Netherlands punishable by law. The court could sentence them to a maximum of six months in prison for that. But colleagues see the arrest of illegal repeat offenders as pointless since the court seldom imposes a penalty. These guys just continue to walk around on the streets and cause trouble as a result," Panka writes.
