Illegal aliens to get fined, not jailed
Staying in the Netherlands illegally is to be classified as a misdemeanour, not a crime. The change would allow for the immediate deportation of illegal aliens without them having to go to jail first. People and organisations providing assistance to illegal aliens would no longer be punishable.
Insiders have confirmed reports that Immigration Minister Gerd Leers is working on a proposal which is yet to be discussed by the full cabinet. At the insistence of Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party PVV the agreement between the minority cabinet conservative VVD and Christian democratic CDA and the PVV, on which the coalition relies for support in parliament, includes a paragraph which states that staying in the Netherlands illegally is to be made punishable as a crime. PVV MP Sietse Fritsma said on Wednesday that his party would only agree to the minister’s plan if illegal aliens were placed in alien detention prior to their deportation.
Mr Fritsma said that illegal aliens should be fined as well as barred from entering the Netherlands again. “After that, they are to be detained and subsequently deported. This is really important to us.”
