Illegal aliens receive departure bonus
Illegal aliens in the Netherlands are sometimes offered money to leave the country.
According to a report published in newspaper , the money allows illegal aliens - many of them failed asylum seekers - to build a new existence in their country of origin.
Offering money is often cheaper – as well as more effective - than providing several months’ worth of shelter or locking people up in detention centres. So far, the approach has proved successful. Last year, more than half of the tens of thousands of aliens ordered to leave the country had demonstrably done so.
Made to measure Rob Bezema of the Repatriation and Departure Service says his service seeks to tailor each offer to the illegal alien’s personal circumstances and ambitions. This sometimes leads to unconventional solutions. A Nepalese was offered a pasta-making machine so he could set up a restaurant. An Egyptian received four camels and an Angolan woman a manicure set to start up a beauty parlour.
"Quite often, those people paid a lot of money to a people smuggler, and they will only agree to going back home when they can do so with their heads held high. We help them do that."
