The Dutch Natural Ice-Skating Championship champion has been named honorary citizen of his hometown.

ANDIJK – Sjoerd Huisman, the marathon ice skater who won last Thursday's Dutch Natural Ice-Skating Championship, has been named honorary citizen of his hometown of Andijk.

After a victory tour in a horse-sleigh on the local skating rink, which was attended by more than 800 fans, the Andijk mayor surprised the champion by naming his honorary citizen of the North Holland town.

On Thursday, Huisman won the 100-kilometre race on the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve in Flevoland province in two hours and 37 minutes. It was the first national championship race on natural ice since 1996.
