ICJ orders Thailand and Cambodia to leave temple
The International Court of Justice ICJ in the Netherlands has ordered Cambodia and Thailand to immediately remove their troops from the disputed Preah Vihear temple. The move came Monday after the ICJ rejected the verdict from an April lawsuit filed in Cambodia against Thailand demanding that it withdraw its troops.
ICJ President Hisashi Owada said that both Cambodia and Thailand must accept a demilitarized zone around the temple complex. They must also abstain from military actions.
Thailand has welcomed the court ruling. “We are pleased that the decision for the withdrawal of troops is applicable to both Cambodia and Thailand,” said Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.
Clashes around the 11th century Hindu temple have resulted in dozens of casualties from both country’s troops.
