Huge increase in new cases of cancer predicted
The number of newly diagnosed cases of cancer will rise to 123,000 a year by 2020, compared to 87,000 in 2007. The number of successfully treated patients will rise from 420,000 in 2007 to 660,000 in 2020.
These are the conclusions of the report Cancer in the Netherlands until 2020 which was published by the cancer foundation KWF Kankerbestrijding.
The foundation writes that the main cause for the predicted increase is the ageing population: cancer is most common at a later age. KWF Kankerbestrijding warns public health care that is should make preparations for the growing number of cancer patients.
The foundation argues that psycho-social care should also be improved and more attentions should be paid to prevention.
