British customs officials at the port of Harwich have seized more than 4.5 million euros worth of drugs in a trailer full of Christmas decorations. The lorry had arrived on a ferry from the Netherlands.

UK Border Agency officers found the drugs in pallets lying underneath layers of decorations. Other pallets contained artificial Christmas trees and more decorations.

The drugs haul – one of the biggest seizures at Harwich this year – contained 235 kilograms of amphetamines, 18 kilograms of cocaine, 15 kilograms of heroin, 85 kilograms of cannabis resin and 17 kilograms of herbal cannabis.

A 53-year-old Belgian man was arrested in connection with the seizure and has been released on bail pending further investigations, local British media reported.
