Housing corporation confirms director fired

The national housing corporation SGBB, based in Hoofddorp, has confirmed that it has fired its director.

HOOFDDORP - The official was dismissed last year following an investigation by the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) and the Pubic Prosecutor's Office into charges of self-enrichment and fraud.

Although no evidence was found to substantiate the charges, what did become apparent was that the director had caused SGBB considerable financial damage with plans for buildings that proved to be too expensive.

SGGB, which builds and maintains care centres and houses for the elderly, is the third Dutch housing corporation to have been involved in a scandal over suspected financial mismanagement in recent months. In February, the director of Amsterdam's Rochdale was dismissed for self-enrichment.

Before that, Woonbron in Rotterdam admitted that its construction of the cruise ship SS Rotterdam had encountered financial difficulties.

Both corporations have since been placed under external supervision by the government.
