AMSTERDAM – A number of hospitals in the Netherlands want to give a guarantee on operations. This has emerged from a survey by BNR Nieuwsradio. The hospital, rather than the insurance company, would then be liable for the costs of treating any complications within the guarantee period.

Chairman of the Netherlands Association of Hospitals (NVZ), Joan Leemhuis, told the radio station that various hospitals are considering introducing a guarantee scheme. One of these is the Westfries Hospital in Hoorn.

Director of the hospital in Hoorn Hugo Keuzenkamp primarily supports a guarantee because he believes it will improve quality. He says anything that reduces the number of errors and complications is good for the patient and the insurer.

A survey last month showed that some 1,700 patients die unnecessarily in hospitals each year, one of the reasons being errors during operations. Public Health Minister Ab Klink wants to see that number halved in the next five years.

Leemhuis supports hospitals giving a guarantee, but warns that a number of obstacles must first be removed. For instance there are still no clear definitions in use of avoidable and unavoidable damage.

A number of hospitals in the US state of Pennsylvania have seen good results after introducing a 90-day guarantee policy. Fewer patients ended up in intensive care and the average number of days patients spent in hospital decreased.
