Horror - Dutch 'killer Santa' film at US festival
Comedy horror film Sint by Dutch director Dick Maas has been selected for screening by the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Under its English title Saint, the chiller is one of eight films chosen in the Cinemania section, which, according to Senior Progammer Genna Terranova is “packed with action, sexy thrills, and an extra helping of blood and guts for good measure”.
Saint is the second Dutch film to be selected for screening at the end of April at the New York festival, which has grown to be most of the most prominent in the world since its founding in 2002. Black Butterflies, an English-language film about the life of South African writer Ingrid Jonker, was picked earlier this year in the World Narrative Features section.
When released in the Netherlands last November, Sint created quite a stir. The Sint in Dutch is none other than Saint Nicholas or Sinterklaas, who brings presents to all well-behaved Dutch children on 6 December. In the film, he emerges not as an avuncular, child-loving character, but as a murderous bishop, fulfilling a grisly prophecy under the 5 December full moon. Full of yuletide horror, the chiller follows local teen Frank as he sets out on a battle to save Amsterdam from the wrathful Sinterklaas and his minions.
Writer and director Dick Maas has said he’s very proud that his film has been selected. “It’s one of the two big US festivals and there was a record number of applications this year. It’s just amazing that Sint has made it to the top eight Cinemania titles,” he said.
