For the first time ever in the Netherlands, the number of homeless have been counted. According to the Statistics Netherlands 18,000 people live on the streets.

The statisticians combined local council data with figures from shelters, as well as checking benefits for the homeless and fraud data. By putting all the information together and determining how much overlap there is, the whole group could be calculated.

The figures mean it will be easier to see in a couple years time whether the problem of homelessness has improved or got worse.
