DEN BOSCH - Willem Holleeder's lawyer Jan-Hein Kuijpers started proceedings on Thursday to have the strict security measures for his client lifted.
He said on Thursday that Holleeder's recovery has not been going well since his open heart surgery two weeks ago. The lawyer said this was partly due to the strict security regime, which was causing his client too much stress.
"That regime must be stopped, otherwise he is going to die," Kuijpers said.
"Crime boss" Willem Holleeder was transferred from the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) to the prison hospital in Scheveningen on Wednesday. The same security measures are in effect here as in the high security facility in Vught, where Holleeder was being held before his medical condition made surgery imperative.
He is not allowed to see his family and may only talk with his lawyer from behind glass, the lawyer said.
