DEN BOSCH – The condition of Willem Holleeder's health leaves much to be desired, says his lawyer Jan-Hein Kuijpers.

Kuijpers said on Tuesday that Holleeder "is in the same condition as immediately after his operation in April." The suspected "top criminal" is determined, however, to attend his trial when it resumes in September, the lawyer said.

In July Holleeder and Kuijpers announced that the recovery after the suspect's heart surgery was progressing better than expected. Now Kuijpers says that his client is not given enough opportunity to rehabilitate because of the strict prison regime under which he's being held.

Kuijpers says this regime is also causing Holleeder additional stress, which does not help matters.
