AMSTERDAM – If there are no complications Willem Holleeder could be released from hospital in as little as two weeks, public prosecutor Koos Plooij told the court this morning. "Preparations are being made for his return to prison."

Plooij said that the recovery time of three to six months cited by Holleeder's lawyer is a "defence strategy." The prosecutor thinks that the defence benefits from delaying Holleeder's trial as long as possible.

Plooij stressed that there is a difference between the suspect being entirely recovered, and being adequately recovered to stand trial.

Plooij expects the suspect's doctors to issue a recommendation this week for when Holleeder can safely be expected to appear in court again.
