AMSTERDAM — Dutch commentators announced themselves pleased with the list of opponents the Holland eleven will face in the qualification rounds for the 2008 European Cup.
The draw was held by UEFA in Montreux, Switzerland on Friday. The Netherlands faces Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Albania, Belarus, Luxembourg in Group G. The Dutch head the group and managed to avoid meeting Germany and Italy.
Holland coach Marco van Basten said he was happy with the line-up. "We can't complain, he wrote on the website of Dutch soccer federation KNVB."We drew well," he added.
The other groups are - A: Portugal, Poland, Serbia-Montenegro, Belgium, Finland, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan; B: France, Italy, Ukraine, Scotland, Lithuania, Georgia, Faroe Islands; C: Greece, Turkey, Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hungary, Moldova, Malta; D: Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Republic of Ireland, Wales, Cyprus, San Marino; E: England, Croatia, Russia, Israel, Estonia, Macedonia, Andorra; F: Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Latvia, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Liechtenstein.
Only teams who come first and second in their group will proceed to the final. There are no play-off rounds in the tournament this time.
The European Cup is being jointly organised by Switzerland and Austria. The qualification rounds begin on 2 September.
