Holland have reached first place in the FIFA world rankings for the first time. It was already known that the 'Orange' team would take over the lead from Spain, but the new rankings were officially published by FIFA on Wednesday.

Spain lost a friendly match against Italy and so missed out on precious points. Dutch national coach Bert van Marwijk said he was proud of the historic lead position, but added he would like a world title even better.

The next World Cup is scheduled to be held in Brazil in three years. The Orange team has been quite successful under Van Marwijk’s leadership; they have lost only two matches since he took over from Marco van Basten three years ago.

The FIFA world rankings were first published in 1993. The Dutch are the seventh nation to hold top position after Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The difference in terms of points is small. The Netherlands has 1.596 points compared to 1.563 for Spain. Germany is in a distant third place with 1.330 points.
