The Holland bridge over the Gooi lake between the mainland and the island polder (reclaimed land) of Almere has fully reopened to lorries today in the presence of Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings.

AMSTERDAM - The bridge is part of the A6 motorway and connects the polder to the A1 motorway between Amsterdam and Hilversum.

The bridge had been closed to freight traffic since April 2007 for repairs and safety improvements. Initially lorries were forced to divert to the A27 motorway or take a ferry across the lake. Last year, the bridge was partially reopened to traffic in both directions after urgent repairs. However, lorry drivers had to keep to the right-hand lane and observe speed limits.

Later today, three winners of a competition for the expansion of the bridge will be announced. The objective of the competition is to design a bridge that stands out in the flat landscape as well as connecting the "old" land to the "new".
