AMSTERDAM – Many holiday-makers are choosing summer holiday destinations outside of the Netherlands despite the hot weather here, the association of Dutch travel bureaus said on Monday.

"Dutch people are fleeing the Dutch heat and booking holidays in the southern European sun," the ANVR said after reviewing figures for the period 9 June and 9 July.

The total number of summer holidays booked was 1% lower than in the same period last year. The picture was much the same during the first four months of the year.

The ANVR’s figures appear to differ from the trend recently observed by Recron, a sector organisation for recreation companies in the Netherlands, as well as by Dutch motorists’ organization ANWB. Both organizations have said that relatively more Dutch people were choosing to enjoy their holidays in the country because of the continuing warm period.
