AMSTERDAM – Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin wants to tackle banks and other financial institutions, like credit card companies, if they process transactions for gambling sites on the internet. The minister hopes this can make online gambling impossible in the Netherlands.

NOS public broadcaster says that the cabinet hopes to tackle gambling addiction with this measure. Online poker is reportedly especially popular among young people.

The Netherlands would be following in the footsteps of the US with this measure. The US has introduced legislation banning credit card companies from processing payments to online gambling services. Last year the ChristenUnie urged for similar regulations in the Netherlands.

Only the Lotto may offer online gaming legally in the Netherlands. Many foreign companies are also active in the Netherlands however via the internet.

Hirsch Ballin is now going to bring criminal charges against banks that cooperate with such sites, he warned.
