THE HAGUE - Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin wants a general ban on the sale and possession of a number of types of knives, including stiletto knives and switchblades.
He wrote this in a letter to Parliament on Monday. These weapons are not currently banned for adults. They must be within certain dimensions however.
A recent study indicated that these kinds of knives can be easily obtained in legal retail circles. Hirsch Ballin says that it has been documented that stilettos and switchblades have been used in stabbings. At the same time there are indications that they are being illegally sold to minors.
The fact that these kinds of weapons are easy to conceal and the speed with which they are ready for use make it easy to abuse the weapons. A general ban on these specific kinds of knives should ensure that they are no longer available, Hirsch Ballin says.
The justice minister will take a definitive decision on the proposed ban in March next year.
