Defence Minister Hans Hillen says he would consider it "embarrassing" if he had to inform NATO that the Netherlands cannot supply police trainers for Afghanistan because a majority in parliament opposes a new mission.

In an interview in newspaper , the minister adds: "It would be embarrassing, because we would fail to do something that others are expecting from us and that is part of our responsibility. What we are preparing as a cabinet fits with what is being asked from us."

In the interview, Mr Hillen points out that over 40 countries are active in Afghanistan. He would consider it "strange" if the Netherlands no longer wished to be among them.

The interview appears a day after the minister announced that a new Afghanistan mission is not likely to be proposed before 2012.
