Dutch police have arrested a 27-year-old man after a high-speed car chase that started on Saturday afternoon in the southern Netherlands and ended 30 minutes later in Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor in northern Belgium

The chase began on the A16 motorway near the town of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, when police attempted to stop a man driving 48 kilometres an hour above the speed limit of 100. He ignored all requests to stop and shot past the checkpoint on the hard shoulder.

During the pursuit, he kept to the hard shoulder and narrowly missed hitting trucks and cars hauling caravans. He also drove at high speed through a petrol station near the town of Moerdijk. At times he reached speeds in excess of 190 kilometres per hour.
