Heineken to take over Ethiopian breweries

The Ethiopian government has expressed preference for Dutch brewery concern Heineken as bidder for two former state-owned breweries. Heineken has announced it is now working with the Ethiopian government on finalising the takeovers.

Earlier, Heineken announced it was the highest bidder for the two breweries in a public auction.The Dutch company made a bid of 57 million euros for Bedele Brewery and 52,5 million euros for Harar Brewery.

The two have a combined market share of 18 percent with brand names such as Bedele, Harar, Hakim Stout and Harar Sofi. Heineken regards Ethiopia as an important growth market in light of its growing population, political stability and its improving economy.
