Statistics Netherlands has announced that approximately 500 people more than usual have died in the Netherlands as a result of the period of warm weather which began on 23 June.

The average maximum temperature between 23 June and 12 July was around 28 degrees Celsius, more than six degrees higher than usual.

Previous reports by Statistics Netherlands revealed the close link between high temperatures and increased death rates. For every degree by which the average temperature exceeds the long-term average, around 30 extra deaths can be expected per week.
