Handshake row splits Amsterdam Academy

The Amsterdam Academy Hogeschool van Amsterdam wants a discussion about a lecturer who refuses to shake hands with women. A spokesman said the academy would organise a series of talks and debates before taking a decision about his future. Opinions are split at the academy since the row last week when it became known that the business economics lecturer refuses to shake hands with women because of his Islamic faith.

The administrative board of the Amsterdam Academy stated that it had no problem with his behaviour since he still greets women politely by bowing to them.

However, Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan says he regards it as an undesirable situation and there have been a large number of reactions from students at the academy calling it an example of discrimination.

According to the spokesman, many other students who have not reacted are puzzled by the fuss being made.
