AMSTERDAM – At least half of all cancer cases are caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, the KWF Cancer Foundation says in a study presented on Wednesday. The organisation writes that many Dutch are not aware of this fact.

Many people think that the environment or heredity plays a major role, while in fact factors like smoking, alcohol, obesity and lack of exercise are more significant culprits.

About 30 percent of the cancer cases are caused by smoking, the KWF reports. Obesity is responsible for about 8 percent of cases, and unhealthy diet for 15 to 30 percent. Heredity and environment are only the cause behind a small percentage of cancer cases.

The KWF Cancer Foundation is launching a new campaign to alert the public to the dangers of an unhealthy lifestyle.
