GRONINGEN – The public prosecution department has charged the three suspects in the Groningen HIV case with premeditated aggravated assault. The public prosecution department also suspects the three men, aged 34, 48 and 49, of rape, sex with someone unable to resist, and the administration of illegal substances to the victims.

The public prosecutor announced this on Thursday. The procedural hearings in the case will start on Wednesday 22 August at the courthouse in Groningen.

The three are suspected of drugging a number of homosexual men in order to sexually assault them. A number of the victims were also injected with HIV-infected blood.

So far 14 men have reported to the police to press charges. Nine men have submitted witness statements, the prosecution says.

The police investigation into the case is ongoing. Medical examinations are still taking place as well. The personality profiles of the suspects have already been drawn up.

The criminal trial of the suspects will most likely start in November of this year.

In order to guarantee impartiality, the case will be heard by judges from Assen and Leeuwarden. This has been decided because one of the victims works at the courthouse in Groningen.
