AMSTRDAM - Guards at an Amsterdam prison are concerned about their own safety. In a letter to an Amsterdam television station, they said that the inmates at the so-called 'Bijlmer Brig' are edgy and resorting to violence against prison staff more frequently. They claim the situation could escalate at any time.

The guards blame a recently introduced programme which gives the prisoners only one hour in the fresh air each day, plus reduced recreational facilities.

The measure sparked unrest soon after it was introduced, with dozens of prisoners refusing to return to their cells. Order was eventually restored by riot police.
