Groningen police arrest 140 teenage thieves

The teenager shoplifters are suspected of at least 230 cases of theft.

Groningen – Police in Groningen have arrested some 140 teenage shoplifters, most of them girls.

They are suspected of at least 230 cases of theft, on the basis of two extensive police investigations.

A police spokesperson said plans for the thefts were made at 22 schools in the northern province of Groningen.

The first investigation resulted in 61 arrests who operated in small groups and stole 'in order to belong'.

The second investigation involved 80 teenagers. Part of the booty was stored in school lockers.
