AMSTERDAM — The northern city of Groningen hosts a Terry Fox Run for the second time  on Saturday April 22.

The Terry Fox Run is a popular family event which has been named after the young Canadian athlete Terry Fox who died from bone cancer at the age of 22. The run is held all over the world to support and collect funding for research into cancer in children.

Groningen wants to strengthen its ties with Canada, mindful of the fact Canadian troops liberated the city from the Nazis on 16 April 1945.

The run consists of several events for people of all ages and fitness levels. Canadian Ambassador to The Netherlands, Colleen Swords, will give the official starting shot for the 10k run at 11am on Saturday. Dutch MP Marjo van Dijken will start the Nordic Walkers (6 or 10 k.) 10 minutes later.

Ineke Mulder, deputy of the province of Groningen, will start the 6k and 10k walking event at 11.20am. Ambassador of the CliniCLowns, Eeuwe Boersma, will start the 2k Kids Run at 11.30am.

People can pre-register via or sign up from 9am on 21 April at a special desk at the Hoornseplas, Kaapse Baan 1 Haren. The family event will also feature music and demonstrations by the Royal Netherlands Maritime Rescue Team (KNRM) and the SAR helicopter of the Royal Air Force.

All participants in the Run will be entered automatically in a raffle, with as the first prize two return flights offered by Air Canada. The Groningen ABN AMRO bank and the "Vrijbuiter" also offer attractive prizes.

During his life, Terry Fox collected funds for cancer research for children. During his "Marathon of Hope" Terry tried to run from east to west Canada. After this death in 1983, the Terry Fox Runs are being organised every year in more than 60 countries. There are four Terry Fox Runs in The Netherlands which collect funding for the Dutch Cancer Foundation KWF Kankerbestrijding (the Dutch Cancer Foundation), which selects research projects locally.

The Terry Fox Run in Groningen is the first Run in 2006. Other Terry Fox Runs will take place in Amersfoort (14 May), Apeldoorn (23 June) and The Hague (17 September).
