The organisers of Pink Saturday in the northern city of Groningen expect some 50,000 visitors will attend the annual event.

The 33rd edition of Pink Saturday Roze Zaterdag, a manifestation aiming to promote sexual diversity, will actually be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Ralph Hilbrandie, deputy chair of the Groningen organisation, says Saturday’s highlights will be the Pink Celebration in the Martini Church and the Parade, which will feature 600 participants and 20 floats. The entire local council will take part two council floats under the leadership of Mayor Peter Rehwinkel, himself a gay man.

The first Pink Saturday was held in Amsterdam in 1978. The manifestation was held outside Amsterdam for the first time in 1981: in the southern city of Den Bosch. Since then the event has each year been held in a different city. Haarlem has been selected as the organising city for the 2012 Pink Saturday.
