Green Left cools towards Afghanistan mission

Dutch opposition party Green Left is worried about the proposed police training mission in Afghanistan. Following a hearing with experts, party leader Jolande Sap said she "does not believe the cabinet has adequately carried out our motion."

Last year, together with opposition Democrats 66, Green Left proposed sending a civil police mission to Afghanistan. However, she regards the present cabinet's plans as too military in nature. She believes the NATO element is too strong and the Afghan police are likely to be trained as a paramilitary rather than a civil force.
