'Greece should leave eurozone'

Other European countries should encourage Greece to leave the eurozone and re-introduce its old currency, the drachma.

Former social affairs minister and deputy finance minister Willem Vermeend made this comment in an opion piece on the web site of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Mr Vermeend argues that Greece will never succeed in repaying its multi-billion-euro debt. Other countries in the eurozone, he says, would be well advised to grant Athens remission of part of its debt and force European banks to make a contribution toward restructuring the remainder.

,,By leaving the eurozone in this way, Greece will be in a better position to work on its economic recovery with its own currency”.Former minister Vermeend currently teaches European fiscal law and fiscal economy at the University of Maastricht.
