Goalie Edwin van der Sar played his final matches on Wednesday during a great farewell party in a packed Amsterdam ArenA, the Ajax home stadium. The Dutch international and his hand-picked dream team beat the current Ajax squad 2-1.

Van der Sar was also victorious in a match between the 1995 Ajax squad against the 1998 national team: 1-0. His son Joey, also a goalie, opened the festivities with a training match between Manchester United D1 and Ajax D1.

Van der Sar's dream team featured Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Dennis Bergkamp, Rio Ferdinand, Dirk Kuijt and John Heitinga. The only player missing from the 1995 Ajax squad was Jari Litmanen, who was unable to attend. Afterwards, Van der Sar thanked the more than 50,000-strong audience: “I will never forget this evening” he stammered.

The forty-year-old won the Champions League and the world cup playing for Ajax and Manchester United. He also played for Juventus and Fulham. Van der Sar defended the goal of the Dutch national team in no less than 130 matches.
