Bicycle maker Accel says the economic crisis is pushing up sales.

THE NETHERLANDS - The company, which makes brands such as Batavus and Sparta, reports a 17 percent increase in profits in 2008.

Sales were especially up in the second half of the year, when the crisis started biting.

Accel says people are turning to bikes because they are cheaper, better for the environment and easier to use for the elderly.

The company expects sales to keep growing in 2009.
