AMSTERDAM — Police have arrested a man and a woman on allegations they had mistreated and possibly held their daughters captive in The Hague for up to a year. One report suggested they might have been prisoners in the family home for longer.

Police said on Monday that they arrested the parents on 6 August, acting on reports that the teenagers, aged 16 and 19, were being held against their will in the family home in the suburb Transvaal in The Hague.

It is not yet exactly known how long the daughters were held captive, but it has been reported that the victims were prevented from leaving the home for "a long time".

RTL News said police suspect the girls were held prisoner for at least one year and possibly several more. The girls were also allegedly mistreated and have been taken to hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

More case details are not yet known, but police have not ruled out further arrests as investigations continue.
