AMSTERDAM - On 18 May an enormous book fair will be opened in the heart of the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, organisers said Thursday.

The book fair is the first monthly market as part of the Amsterdam World Capital of the Book Year 2008, which is to begin on 23 April and last a whole year, project management bureau Amsterdam Book City said.

The grand book fair is due to take place each month and will host more than 1,000 book stands. It will be located in the heart of the medieval city centre, partly along the Amstel river banks.

Apart from the monthly book fair, people will be able to enjoy a broad variety of public debates, workshops and symposiums during the book year.
