LEIDSCHENDAM – For the first time in history France is no longer the favourite holiday destination for the Dutch. Germany is the new number one. The Dutch made more than 2.9 million holiday visits to Germany in the past year, compared to 2.6 million to France.

This has emerged from the annual results of the Holiday Survey published by the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions and TNS Nipo on Thursday.

In terms of the total time and money spent, however, France remains in the lead. Those who go to France often spend a long time there, three weeks at a campground in the summer, for instance. The Dutch spent 30 million nights in France and spent EUR 1.2 billion during their stay.

Germany is more popular for city trips and short holidays. That explains the far lower number of overnight stays in the country (17.3 million) and the lower spending (EUR 0.8 billion) compared to France.

"The Dutch are catching on more and more to the fact that Germany offers good value for money," says researcher Ad Schalekamp. "The infrastructure, both the motorways and the railways, is excellent and Germany feels close. The people are friendly, the service level is high. The negative reputation from WWII is also ebbing away."

There were no other changes in the top ten of destinations besides Germany's move into first place. The Dutch went on holiday 35.1 million times in the past year, 600,000 times more than a year earlier. Holiday spending rose by 6 percent to EUR 13.8 billion. The researchers attributed the increase in holidays to the improving economy.

6,500 Dutch took part in the survey, which was conducted between October 2006 and September 2007. 81 percent of this group had gone on holiday one or more times during the period in question. On average they went on holiday 2.8 times. One in five Dutch did not go on holiday at all.
