Geert Wilders trial resumes

The trial of Geert Wilders is going ahead. The Amsterdam court today dismissed objections by Wilders’ lawyer Bram Moszkowicz. He claimed his client could not receive a fair trial because the court already regarded him as guilty.

Mr Moszkowicz’s claimed that the court had overstepped the bounds by agreeing to prosecute Geert Wilders after the Public Prosecutor’s Office had decided against it.

The Freedom Party leader is charged with insulting and discriminating against Muslims and inciting hatred. He referred to Islam as “a fascist ideology” and to the prophet Muhammad as a “murderer and paedophile”. He also compared the Qur’an with Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
