LEEUWARDEN  - Geert Dales has announced his resignation as mayor of Leeuwarden. The prominent member of the Liberal VVD party made the announcement at a press conference in Leeuwarden today.

55-year-old Dales will take on the position of chairman of the management board at the university of professional education Hogeschool InHolland in The Hague. He has been mayor of the Frisian capital since 1 May 2004 but is resigning from this position with effect on 15 July.

Haddo Meijer, chairman of the supervisory board at the university, is extremely pleased with the new chairman.

"Dales matches the profile we drew up in every way. Dales is the right man to lead our organisation. He has the necessary administrative experience, is socially engaged and is an open, dynamic and energetic personality."

Dales said leading the university would be a unique opportunity to serve the public sector in a different capacity.

Dales served as alderman of finance and economic affairs in Amsterdam and director of the Fund for visual arts, design and building before taking on the position of mayor in Leeuwarden.
