Gay fury at Jedi Mind Tricks

COC says the rappers’ lyrics include homophobic texts (“Beat a faggot till he ‘aint f….n’ gay no more”) which incite to violence against gays.

The LGBT rights organisation has called on its sympathisers to gather at the Melkweg from 18:30 local time to help put up rainbow posters on and near the pop venue. The rainbow is the international symbol of the LGBT movement. The protesters will also hand out pink bracelets to people attending the controversial concert.

Jedi Mind Tricks denies the allegations and has offered its apologies to the Melkweg for the commotion. “We appreciate that the Melkweg is not giving into outside pressure, even more so because it is not justified.”

Freedom of speech
Earlier this week, COC asked the Amsterdam pop venue to cancel the concert, but the Melkweg refused. In a statement from the management it said: “This is a group which pushes, but does not cross, the limits of the freedom of speech. Another consideration is that some lyrics date from their early days and have not been sung by the band for years”.

However, COC says the band was still using the controversial lyrics during performances in the Melkweg in 2007 and 2009. According to the chair of COC’s Amsterdam branch: “In a city like Amsterdam, where we are cracking down on discrimination and homophobia, a statement must be made against this kind of music. The so-called apologies made on Wednesday are the band’s apologies to the Melkweg for the commotion they caused. It was neither a gesture of goodwill towards the city of Amsterdam, nor to its many LGBT citizens”.
