Gang of Dutch horticulture fraudsters dismantled

Police in the south of the Netherlands have arrested nine horticulturalists on suspicion of money laundering and fraud. They have been accused of forming a criminal organisation which was exploiting a tax loophole, making their harvests virtually invisible to the inland revenue. Dutch justice authorities say that a foreign middleman is the main suspect.

The horticulturalists were growing strawberries, raspberries, asparagus and mushrooms. They caught tax inspectors' attention because all of their cars had Luxembourg registration numbers. Police searched homes in the Netherlands and other countries, and confiscated computers, cars and an airplane, as well as money and documents.
